Why do cons think ANWR is some sort of magic wand?

It's not and we understand it. Drilling should have begun years ago. The Chinese have been drilling 50 miles off the coast of Florida for a while now. Something is seriously wrong with that picture. You do have a point though about how long it would take. Is it too late to think about the future?
