If someone doesn't do what you want them to do, should you start spreading rumors and lies about them?

Once upon a time I believed John McCain was a man of integrity and honor. The way he's behaving now made me look a little deeper into his past and now I find that, no, he's a jerk. He's completely lost my respect.
