Need help choosing between historic weapons, mech's, or both?

I wrote a short story about a boy who is teleported into another dimension, and he if forced to choose between staying alive or die to save two civilizations from destruction. I skipped the war part because I wanted a sequel. Now I need to know if I should make the war a mecha war or should I go with old weapons like swords, axes, maces, etc... Maybe both.
